For seven years programmer Evan Brown has been fighting his former employer for ownership of an idea he came up with. This is an interesting article I came across recently. Several years ago, Brown figured out a system to translate data from old mainframe computer programs into modern computer languages, an innovation that would enable businesses to run their old software on much faster computers. Brown says he had been wrestling with the problem since 1975 and finally, while on vacation in 1996, he figured out the final 20 percent of the puzzle. There are few things as murky as the process in which the U.S. military hands out large contracts, especially in times of war...especially in this war. When the secret $7 billion Restore Iraqi Oil (RIO) contract the Pentagon gave Halliburton KBR was revealed in March 2003, Bush administration critics began accusing the Pentagon of cronyism, because of the Cheney-Halliburton connection. In response, the Pentagon began promising to replace that contract by holding a competition for two new contracts as quickly as possible. The irony is the "Sons of RIO" competition turned out to be far more corrupt than the secret sole-source award. Pentagon officials, up and down the chain of command, lied and cheated Halliburton's competitors and broke federal laws to ensure Halliburton kept all of the Iraq oil work. They include generals and high-level political appointees at the Pentagon, as well as lower-level contracting staff at the Army Corps of Engineers' Southwestern Division/Fort Worth District, who conducted the Sons of RIO competition. When Americans go to the polls in November to elect a president, they will confront a voting system beset by many of the same problems that produced the bitterly disputed outcome four years ago and led to a 36-day legal standoff ultimately decided by the Supreme Court. In my humble opinion...the Republicans are praying for another close election. It's the only way they can steal the presidency for another four years without raising eyebrows. In the late 1990s, many observers hoped that we had finally broken free of the slow income growth that had bogged down the American middle class for more than two decades. Unfortunately, experience since 2000 suggests that the long period of stagnant wages is dragging on. In marked contrast to the 1947–74 period—when wages for almost all workers were rising steadily and faster than the inflation rate—average wages after the mid-1970s failed to grow consistently. The hour-long documentary features nearly twenty political observers, including Lt. Colonel Karen Kwiatkowski, former Chief UN Weapons Inspector Scott Ritter, former Pentagon analyst Daniel Ellsberg, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Jody Williams, international activist Vandana Shiva, journalism academic Robert Jensen, and musician Michael Franti. "By helping us understand how fear is being actively cultivated and manipulated by the current administration, Hijacking Catastrophe stands to become an explosive and empowering information weapon in this decisive year in U.S. history," writes Naomi Klein, author of No Logo.

Information on passengers who took a commercial flight within the United States in June will be turned over to the government so it can test a new system for identifying potential terrorists. Federal officials say people will have a chance to tell the government what they think about the plan during a 30-day comment period. A lot of privacy advocate groups are skeptical, since the system will have a tendency to 'misidentify' innocent people. Imagine...if it took Senator Ted Kennedy, who's name appeared on the list, three weeks to clear up that mistake, how long do you think it would take you? Authorities targeting of people because of their racial background or religious affiliation is a deep-rooted problem in the United States, with nearly 32 million people reporting they've been racially profiled. Amnesty International USA released a report recently saying that at least 87 million people...one in three...in the United States are at high risk of being victimized because they belong to a racial, ethnic or religious group whose members are commonly targeted by police for unlawful stops and searches. Of course, being of African-american decent, this is nothing new to me or most of the visitors on this site. I guess those of you of Middle east decent or practicing the Muslim faith are dealing with what we've experienced over the last 200 plus years in this country. I previously added an entry, on September 8th, regarding events in Florida surrounding an investigation about alleged voter fraud. During this investigation, it was reported that it was nothing more than an attempt to intimidate elderly black voters who were active in getting more participation out of the black community for the 2004 presidential election. Soldiers from a combat unit at Fort Carson say they have been told to re-enlist for three more years or be transferred to other units expected to deploy to Iraq soon. Now, is it just me or does anyone else, with at least half a brain, realize these poor bastards are between a rock and a hard place. These soldiers have the option to re-enlist for three more years so the U.S. can legally ship their asses off to the middle east or be deployed back with another unit for the remainder of their contractual obligation...which at that point, unfortunately, the army implements the notorious stop loss policy and keep them there for as long as they see fit. This is a very interesting article I came across recently, by Sasha Abramsky, regarding repressed memories of traumatic childhood events. Depending on how old you are...some may remember the 'witch hunts' that took place during the 80's regarding childhood sex abuse allegations brought forth after a few visits to the local shrink. Dozens of families were torn apart during this period. What make's it especially interesting is that years later(90's)...several of the accusers admitted to being swayed to make the accusations and that the memories were false! The Bush House of Cards: A deck of comical playing cards that showcases the current administration trying to steer the American ship of state since January 2001. Also included are some of their misguided friends in the media and Congress. Each card shows a caricature of a key person with a nickname and descriptive blurb. These patriotic cards were inspired by the Iraqi deck distributed by the Pentagon to help round up various key players in Saddam's regime. Unlike the Iraqi deck, however, these cards are only for political fun and games.

Today marks the three year anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks that took place in New York. Since that time...we've invaded two countries...Afganistan and Iraq. Keep in mind that 80% of the alleged terrorist involved were Saudi nationals! Over 1000 U.S. troops have been killed with tens of thousands being seriously injured. Of course...never forget the innocent civilians in both of those countries that have perished in the fight against terrorism. On top of it all...we have to deal with an abundance of unanswered questions regarding what actually took place that day and why. I found an interesting article, by Sander Hicks, discussing a new "movement" to find the answers to many of the puzzling questions that the 9/11 Commission's final report failed to address. Unfortunately, that report is being compared to the Warren Commision's report regarding President Kennedy's assassination over 40 years ago...full of holes and unexplained events! More reports are starting to surface regarding Bush's desertion from his military duties in the National Guard. I'm amazed that Kerry and the Democrats are not all over this shit! Bush is such an imbecile, that just telling the truth regarding his character and life in general will sink his presidency. I'm also amazed at how the Republicans can twist the truth and fabricate lies so skillfully as to cause Kerry to slip in the polls recently...not by much mind you, but slip none the less. Kerry has to start leaving the house with his balls each morning if he wants to win this election by a wide margin. I fear that if the Republicans can keep this race close, that's all they'll need to manipulate the vote, just enough, to steal another damn election from the people. Anyway it's my intent to keep the smell of Bush's shit in your face as a reminder of what your next four years will be like if you don't spread the word and ...VOTE! Make sure you check out this article by Bob Herbert I came across recently. He details how the long and ugly tradition of suppressing the black vote is alive and thriving in the Sunshine State! There's an investigation currently taking place regarding the allegations of voter fraud that came up during the Orlando mayoral election this past March. Herbert brings out how state police officers, armed and in plain clothes, have questioned dozens of voters in their homes. Many of the elderly black voters who found themselves face to face with state police officers in Orlando are members of the Orlando League of Voters, which has been very successful in mobilizing the city's black vote. Most of you are aware of the issues regarding the torture that took place at the Abu Ghraib military prison in Iraq. Some of you may not be aware that the situation is probably a hundred times worst than what the U.S. media is spoon feeding us. The media is centering this issue around seven soldiers who were caught in the pictures released to the public. What you probably haven't heard is that most of the torture, based on several thousand pages of classified military documents, was committed by private contractors, hired as interrogators at Abu Ghraib. Of course that side of the war is a well guarded secret. Since the private contractors are not officially military personnel, Bush doesn't have to make public their misdeeds or their casualty rates. Check out this little snippet from one of the prisoners detained at Abu Ghraib...

Kasim Hilas told a CID investigator that he witnessed a harrowing incident one night on Tier 1A. "I saw the translator Abu Hamid fucking a kid," Hilas stated. "His age would be about 15-18 years. I found an interesting article written by Jonathan Steele regarding the U.S. reports on Iran's nuclear capabilities. Steele brings out in this article how similiar the tone is to our run up to war with Iraq. My personal viewpoint on this...I've come across some interesting sources that claim that the only reason the Bush regime hasn't opened up a third front with Iran is the 2004 elections. Some feel that if Bush wins a second term we'll be launching strikes against Iran before the summer of 2005. I find it interesting that just recently the decision has been made to pull thousands of troops from around the world for the purpose of reallocating them for other "operations". I came across another interesting article regarding some questions you can put forth to citizens supporting the Bush administration. One thing I've noticed is that for the most part, individuals backing Bush normally have a 'single-issue' mentality. Thousands upon thousands of citizens arrived in New York earlier this week to participate in one of the largest protest in recent history. These citizens have one fervent agenda and that is to remove George W. Bush from office this November. Sadly...one question is starting to be asked...Where were the blacks? Answer: They stayed home! That history making crowd in New York had one thing in common...their 'whiteness'. As a brother I find this very upsetting. Considering that we(blacks) have the most to lose, out of all the other ethnic groups in America, I find it puzzling that we are showing so little participation in this political revolution currently taking place. I feel that come November 2nd...most of us(blacks) will be 'at home' as the nation raises its voice regarding who should lead this country for the next four years. Margaret Cho, whose concert film Revolution has her artfully styled as Che on the cover, isn't necessarily leading a revolution. She's leading a tour, certainly, called "State of Emergency" and right now, the comic has her sights set on mobilizing her base around the hotly contested 2004 election. Cho's revolution has been a long time coming. This tour is about the state of the country, what's happening in media, politics and the world. I found this very informative and somewhat entertaining article, by T.D. ALLMAN, in Rolling Stone Magazine recently. He brings to light an interesting history regarding our current (v)ice (p)resident...Dick Cheney. Supposedly any administration Cheney has served on, regardless of his position, that current President failed to win a second term in the Oval Office! In a nation where children are taught in grade school that every citizen has the right to vote, it would be comforting to think that the last vestiges of voter intimidation, oppression and suppression were swept away by the passage and subsequent enforcement of the historic Voting Rights Act of 1965. It would be good to know that voters are no longer turned away from the polls based on their race, never knowingly misdirected, misinformed, deceived or threatened.
