How long have you been modeling?
Professionally, for about 2 years.
What made you decide to pursue a career in modeling?
I was a little skeptic about it at first, but after my first photoshoot I saw that it was something I actually enjoyed.
What impact has modeling had on your personal life?
Not much. I still make time for my friends and family. I have had the opportunity to meet many interesting new people through modeling though.
Overall, what has been your opinion of the modeling industry as a whole?
Just like every other industry there are people who are out to help you and those who are out to hurt you. You just have to be precautious and make sure you don't get mixed up with the wrong people. Make sure those you work with are professional.
What do you intend to gain or get out of your career in modeling?
I get personal fulfillment out of it and I believe I will continue to do so. It makes me feel good knowing I have the ability to achieve work on my own at such a young age and while I'm still in college.
What are some of the projects you're currently working on?
I just shot for the May issue of Black Men's Magazine so I'm waiting for that to come out. I recently shot an ad for Shake -N- Go hair also and I'm going to be shooting with two other hair companies soon. This month I'm going to be on a Power 99 radio show and I'm doing a Roc-a-Wear fashion show. And as always, there are other things in the works
What are your turn-ons?
Intelligent men, chocolate brothas, and bad boys!
What are your turn-offs?
Arrogance.
Name some things you couldn't live without?
My MP3 player, my cell phone, and my iguana, Maximus.
How would you describe your overall personality?
I'm sweet but sassy, sexy but classy....I'm just a cool ass chick to know. :)
Tell us one thing about yourself that tends to shock people once they get to know you personally?
That I'm smart. A lot of people have this predisposition that models are dumb. They fail to recognize that there's more to us than just looks. People are usually surprised to hear that I graduated high school at the top of my class and continue to get straight A's. Surprise....models have brains too!
What would you consider your greatest strength?
My writing abilities. I'm a great writer which is why I'm majoring in journalism and love to write rhymes.
What would you consider your greatest physical asset?
My legs and my dark brown hair...brunettes really have more fun!
What do you consider the perfect first date?
I like to do fun stuff like roller skating, bowling, or going to a carnival.
Regarding the gentlemen you date, name one quality they must possess and why?
Intelligence is a must. I can't date a guy that I can't hold a convo with.
What are your opinions on the state of the black male today?
I feel for them. Its so hard to be a black man in America today. The whole system is against them. They're dealing with it though. Although a lot of them sometimes get caught up, more and more black men are going to college and beginning successful careers.
When a brother attempts to approach you in public, give us some advice on how it should be done?
Don't even try any corny lines...they don't work. Your best bet is to make me laugh. I like men with a good sense of humor and a good way to catch my interest is by showing me that you have one.
Give us a description of a normal evening at home with you?
A normal evening would consist of me chillin, probably watching movies, and end with a nice bubble bath.
Overall today theres a lot of talk regarding sisters and the whole bisexual movement, if you want to call it that. What are your personal feelings regarding this rising 'phenomenon' among black women?
Its nothing new. It was a trend at my high school. I don't have anything against anyone's choices or preferences. Do what you wanna do.
What is your political affiliation? (Democrat, Republican, etc.)
Democrat.
What are your current opinions on the Bush administration and on the work they're doing?
Before endangering any lives, they should have tried every method to peacefully resolve the issue.
What are your opinions on the capture of Saddam Hussein and do you think it'll make an impact in the war on 'terrorism'?
If Saddam Hussein is indeed linked to Bin Laden and terrorism then he should be imprisoned and given a trial like anyone else. However, I don't know if enough proof was given to warrant invading his country.
Do you intend to vote in this years(2004) election?
Yes.
What are your feelings regarding the 2004 election, especially after the 2000 voting fiasco?
I'm definitely skeptical about it. The 2000 election made me feel that our votes go in vain. The people did not elect Bush. How can we be sure that the same thing won't happen again?
What are some of your other interest outside of modeling?
Rapping, writing, shopping, dining, and movies.
Where do you see yourself in the next 5 years?
In 5 years I hope for Vanna Black to be a household name. I hope to have graced the covers and pages of many magazines, modeled for several major clothing, hair, and cosmetics ad campaigns, and have a record deal.
What advice would you give to young women considering a career in modeling?
Don't sign with any agency that charges you a fee. All they're entitled to is their percentage (which should be no more than 20%) when they find you work. And also, you don't necessarily have to pay a whole lot of money for a portfolio. Many photographers offer TFP shoots or low-cost tests.
